We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Comb Lasers for Optical Communications
Data rates continue to increase at exponential rates and the energy used by data centers to process all our information demands may consume 20% of the world's energy by 2030. Multi-channel lasers (comb lasers) provide a solution to this important problem. Enlightra develops combs lasers to transmit data. They are 100x faster and are up to 10x more energy efficient than today’s solutions for coherent communications. Enlightra is the first company in the world to commercialize microresonator-based comb lasers. This presentation will cover the current laser comb sources and Enlightra's unique solution.
Speaker
Dr. John Jost, Co-Ceo / Cofounder Enlightra
Dr. Jost has over 25 years of research experience with 9 of those years spent working with Dr. Dave Wineland (Nobel Prize 2012) as both a Ph.D. student and a postdoctoral researcher in the Time and Frequency Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, CO USA. Dr. Jost received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder while performing his thesis research at NIST. His doctoral thesis work lead to the first demonstration of entangled mechanical oscillators, which was considered one of the top scientific breakthroughs of the year. In addition, this work lead to another experiment demonstrating a complete methods set for quantum computing – which was considered to be the physics breakthrough of the year.
For the past 11 years, he has devoted his time and effort to developing the technology of optical microresonators, creating the first self-referenced micro-resonator optical frequency comb and developing a new, all-optical stabilization technique for microresonators. He is currently the co-founder and co-ceo of Enlightra the world's leading company in the commercialization of optical microresonator frequency comb technology.
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
