Femtosecond laser-induced nano-crystallization in transparent substrates

Over the last two decades, femtosecond lasers used in a non-ablative regime have emerged as capable tools not only for mask-less glass 3D lithography, but also for in-volume writing of photonics components, such as waveguides, Bragg gratings, or arbitrarily complex phase retarders, among others.

Beyond these nowadays industrially mature processes, here we will discuss ongoing research conducted worldwide and in our laboratory towards laser-induced three-dimensional crystallization in transparent substrates. Specifically, we will show that the complex non-linear laser-matter interaction and the extreme exposure conditions can induce a different laser-annealing modality than usually observed with conventional lasers, opening the prospects for forming unusual crystalline phases with intriguing properties.

While this research is at its early phase, the application prospects for functional integration are rich and include the formation of semiconducting phases in otherwise non-conductive materials, the creation of nanocrystal-in-glass composites optical materials and in-volume nano-structuring of Bragg reflectors, among others.

Speaker

Prof. Yves Bellouard, EPFL
Prof. Yves Bellouard heads the Galatea Lab and the Richemont Chair in multiscale micromanufacturing at Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Before joining EPFL in 2015, he was associate professor at Eindhoven University of Technologies (TU/e) in the Netherlands, and prior to that, research scientist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He received a PhD in Microengineering from EPFL in 2000 and an MSc in Applied Physics from Univ. Pierre et Marie Curie (now Sorbonne University) in 1995 in Paris.
His current research interests are in advanced manufacturing, and more specifically, in laser-based methods for material processing and system integration.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
