We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
From the laboratory to the field, having fun with distributed fibre optic sensing!
Distributed fibre optic sensing, transforming telecommunication fibres in thermometers, strain gauges or microphones is now widely deployed in the field. It provides valuable information on the monitored asset.
In the power cable industry, especially offshore wind, temperature measurement in combination with electrical current is used to compute the conductor temperature and eventually the cable transportation capacity. Similarly, acoustic measurement provide information on intrusion or fault position. In the pipeline industry, temperature and acoustic data are used for leak detection and right of way protection. And strain measurement is key to the deformation of civil engineering structures.
Starting from basic research at the EPFL this talk will provide a short reminder of the physical principles underlaying distributed fibre optic sensing and will then concentrate on field applications, illustrating the complexity of the installation and of the gathered data, but also the value it brings to the operators.
Speaker
Dr. Etienne Rochat, CTO at Omnisens
Following research work in fibre optics at the ABB Corporate Research Centre (Switzerland) and at the University of Essex (UK), Etienne ROCHAT joined OMNISENS (Switzerland) in 2004, first as a product manager, then as R&D manager (2009), and CTO (2013). He is in charge of product research & development for the company monitoring solution, focusing on optical interrogators, sensing cables and novel applications. The corresponding products are now deployed worldwide for pipeline and power cable monitoring.
In 2022 Etienne became CTO of EOSS, a Prysmian business unit dedicated to sensing in which Omnisens is integrated.
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
