250 fs, 150 mW laser with tunable pulse repetition rate in GHz-regime
We report a compact ultrafast solid-state laser source with a pulse repetition rate tunable in the range of 0.5 – 1.3 GHz. The optical cavity design allows a user to vary the repetition rate only by moving the mirrors inside the resonator and no components need to be changed. The Yb:KYW crystal-cavity emits few hundred femtosecond pulses at a central wavelength of 1040 nm and the SESAM modelocking enables self-starting. The main issue is to design a cavity, which avoids a Q-switched modelocking which leads to instabilities and SESAM damage. In a robust pulsed operation mode an average power up to 150 mW is achieved using a stabilized single mode pump diode at a wavelength of 981 nm with a power of maximum 800 mW. In continuous wave mode, up to 270 mW were measured with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 33%. The setup runs without water cooling and due to the single mode pump source we measure a very low noise level below -50 bB. High-repetition rate ultrafast lasers have various possible industrial applications including synchronisation, micro-machining, metrology or sensing.
Speaker
Prof. Dr. Bojan Resan
Prof. Dr. Bojan Resan received BS in physics; MS in photonics from ENSPS Strasbourg/IOTA Paris; PhD in optics from College of Optics (CREOL), USA, in 2004. Afterwards, he was with Coherent, Santa Clara, CA, USA. In 2008, he joined TBP/JDSU/Lumentum in Switzerland as Product Line Manager and Senior R&D Manager. Since 2017, Bojan is with FHNW, Professor since 2019, leading ultrafast laser development.

Dr. Christoph S. Harder received the ETH Diploma in 1979 and the Master and PhD in EE in 1980 and 1983 from Caltech, Pasadena, USA. He is cofounder of the IBM Zurich Laser Diode Enterprise which pioneered the first 980nm high power pump laser for telecom optical amplifiers and laser diodes for industrial and consumer applications with ultrahigh reliability. He is the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship and the OSA Fellow recognition. Christoph is now heading a consulting company and is cofounder of Swissphotonics and has been its president for the last few years. He has published more than 100 papers and 20 patents and has held a variety of staff and management positions at ETH, Caltech, IBM, Uniphase, JDS Uniphase, Nortel and Bookham and has volunteered on society boards and committees.
