Optics products: linking performance and generation

The quality and performance of the next generation of optical products, e.g. in imaging, communication, navigation, AR and medicine, depend heavily on the technological advances that need to be made. Traditionally, this has been achieved by optimising technologies and innovations in terms of precision, accuracy and miniaturisation, as well as mastering the rapidly growing (multi-site) data clouds generated by performance, design and manufacturing: Typically, the first step is to optimise product layouts and setups, and subsequently to identify the optimal production technologies, e.g. by selecting from among more than 350 different optical manufacturing techniques around the world.
To achieve further disruptive advances in optical product performance, one possible approach is to bridge the process windows of product and manufacturing technologies. This is done by mastering the communication of product parameters and optics generation process parameters by classifying optical systems and manufacturing processes accordingly. As an example, the classification of optical systems for manufacturability and the classification of optical manufacturing technologies for designability will be discussed and applied to develop a more stable generation process of sub-millimetre optics for endoscopy.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
