Optical fiber interconnects in road vehicles and investigation of cascaded connectors in a link

The presentation explains the trend towards fiber optic connections in automobiles and shows the results of the HUBER+SUHNER investigation of four cascaded expanded beam connectors. Experiments and simulations with different lateral and angular offsets of mated connectors show the attenuation of each connection and the power distribution in the fiber core after each connection. The IEEE power budget for Gigabit Ethernet can be met if the lateral and angular offset is limited at each connection. As optical links are not yet widely used in road vehicles, certain requirements are still unknown by OEM and transceiver manufacturers.

Thomas Schmalzigaug, Standardization Manager HUBER+SUHNER
Thomas Schmalzigaug is the standardization manager in the Research & Development departement in the Fiber Connectivity business unit of the Communication Segment of HUBER+SUHNER. He has a bachelor’s degree in precision engineering and an executive master of business administration. 

He previously worked at HUBER+SUHNER in the development, product and market management of fiber optic products. Thomas Schmalzigaug is an active expert in many working groups in several international, regional and national standardization committees for fiber optic topics

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
