We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Photonics21
Photonics 21 was started by Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding with the support of EPIC and VDI in 2005 and 200 members in order to establish a European Technology Platform for Photonics. EU projects with Photonics content were already present in the earlier framework 6 program, but the goal was to set aside a separate budget and set of calls for Photonics, in short
lobbying for photonics as a key enabling technology.
Now, 20 years later Photonics is still following the initial idea, by providing regularly a strategic research and innovation agenda,
provide a platform to its (now 4000) members to generate calls in workgroup and to connect through mirror representatives in government for funding of these calls.
Photonics has become under pressure and thus the companies did commit to multiply the EU project money (organized as a PPP). Initially the pressure came from photovoltaics, who organized themselves independently and now from dissidents joining electronics (i.e. photonic integrated circuits) and joining quantum efforts. Nevertheless,
photonics has been able to set aside 420Mio over 7 years for projects.
Switzerland is in a unique position as our academic as well as industrial partners can participate in EU calls, without loading the project budget, while being paid from Bern (academia as well as industry), as we did in framework 6.
More importantly, Photonics 21 is still
an excellent platform for networking and staying in contact with leading research efforts and call generation in workgroups, for free.
