A versatile beam-folding approach for laser spectroscopy

Over recent decades, laser absorption spectroscopy has become a well-established tool for a wide range of applications. Yet, there is a growing demand for lightweight spectrometers suitable for mobile platforms, offering the advantage of high spatio-temporal resolution monitoring of urban, industrial sites, or even the upper atmosphere. At Empa, we address these needs by developing a novel multipass cell concept that enhances robustness, compactness, and portability. This presentation discusses the key findings along with some application highlights.

Dr. Béla Tuzson, Group leader Laser Spectroscopy, EMPA
Béla Tuzson received his PhD in natural sciences from Rupertus Carola University of Heidelberg, Germany. After his studies at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, he joined the Laboratory of Air Pollution and Environmental Technology at Empa as a postdoctoral researcher, where he contributed to establish the isotope ratio measurements of trace gases based on quantum cascade laser (QCL) technology. He has over 20 years experience in developing and applying mid-IR laser spectroscopic methods for isotope and atmospheric research.

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
