The European Space Deep-tech Innovation Centre ESDI – accelerating deep-tech

The European Space Deep-tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) is a center of excellence established as a partnership of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Switzerland. Under leadership of ESA and in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), ESDI develops and commercializes deep-tech for space. Its mission is to accelerate deep-tech innovation by setting up a cooperative research framework, guiding research teams, and funding innovative research programs.

ESDI has identified conundrums in the field of deep-tech, which serve as the foundation for future research and development activities. The core elements of the program include a focus on use-inspired, transformative research with a credible short-term potential for commercial applications and immediate practical impact.

One of the key upcoming research programs focuses on quantum technology, implemented in partnership with the PSI. This program aims to explore and develop quantum technologies applicable to space, addressing some of the most challenging problems faced by ESA and its Member States.

Speaker

Johann Richard, Head of ESDI
Johann Richard is the Head of the European Space Deep-tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) at the European Space Agency (ESA). In his role at ESA, Johann oversees the development of research programs that aim to connect breakthrough research of collaborative research programmes for disruptive research linked to commercialization. He is currently working with a team from the Paul Scherrer Institute to set up an initial program focused on quantum technologies and data management. Before his current position, Johann was part of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), where he engaged in industrial policy, technology strategy, and business incubation, specifically within the Swiss Delegation to ESA.

Johann's academic background lies in Physical Electronics and Innovation Management, complemented with Public Governance and Administration.
