PhotonHub Europe: One-stop-shop for SMEs

PhotonHub Europe is the largest EU project in photonics ever financed by the European Commission. It works as a one-stop-shop for before all Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises in Europe and aims at spreading photonic technologies in the next-generation products of innovative of SMEs. The project aims therefore at reaching out to many “non-photonic” companies and contributing thus to the evolution e.g. mentioned in our SwissMEM-Swissphotonics White Paper of 2017, namely that more and more products include photonic solutions. The companies are supported by an impressive network of photonic actors and not less than 500 experts throughout Europe. In Switzerland, EPFL with Swissphotonics as a third-party, CSEM and Ligentec are acting as technology providers. SMEs are supported through small innovation projects of mostly two main types, test-before-invest (aiming at prototyping) and upscaling to move to higher TR levels. The project also includes training, support with finding investments and is also aiming at engaging national and regional governments. PhotonHub is a Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) in photonics and probably one of the earliest example of a large network of DIHs piloted by the European Commission through the Digital Europe Programme.

We will describe the opportunities offered by PhotonHub Europe and how it operates in practice. The cofinancing of upscaling projects has recently been increased from 50 to 85% and the chances to obtain such projects are much larger.

Speaker

Dr. Pierre-Yves Fonjallaz, Delegate of Swissphotonics in Romandy
Pierre-Yves Fonjallaz is the delegate of Swissphotonics in Romandy with a basis at EPFL where he is also active as programme manager for EPFL’s research office and supporting the researchers with their EU project applications and the management of their projects. He obtained his PhD in Physics at EPFL in 1995. He then spent 23 years in Stockholm where he worked at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and for the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE) in different positions from researcher to coordinator. He founded and led the national platform PhotonicSweden from 2011 to 2018. Back to Switzerland and EPFL in 2018, he has been active in several EU projects in photonics for Swissphotonics and EPFL such as CARLA, PhotonHub Europe and 360 CARLA.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
