We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Non-destructive 3D tracking of phase changes and foaming with X-ray computed tomography
The development of high-power, stable X-ray sources with small focal spot sizes and fast detectors enables the recording of X-ray computed tomography (XCT) measurements also with laboratory instruments in less than 1 minute. Long sequences of experiments performed back-to-back track the evolution of samples in full 3D without altering the specimen. In this talk, we will discuss applications of dynamic XCT measurements. To enable reliable energy storage system, the solidification and melting process of phase change materials has to be tracked. Our experiments demonstrate that even small differences in the density of solid and liquid phase are sufficient to resolve the distribution of the phases and to track the phase change process. Furthermore, dynamic processes from process and food industry will be presented indicating the possibility to track processes even with conventional laboratory systems.
Speaker
Dr. Philipp Schütz, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)
Philipp Schütz studied theoretical physics and optics at ETH Zürich and graduated in theoretical biophysics from university Zürich specializing on network analysis and the analysis of fluorescence experiments. Afterwards, he moved to EMPA in Dübendorf to develop X-ray computed tomography instrumentation and analysis procedures. In 2014, Philipp was elected as lecturer at Lucerne university of Applied Sciences and arts. Since 2019, Philipp and his team operate the X-ray computed tomography platform Luci at the same institution
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
